Getting Started
How can I try curling?
We offer Learn to curl classes almost every weekend year round! Fridays are 7:30 to 9:30pm and Saturdays are 6-8pm. Classes are $30/person. The fall and winter classes sell out fast. Make sure to sign up early! Registration can be found at utaholympiclegacy.org on the oval sports page under curling.
What do I need to bring/wear for my Learn to Curl?
All special equipment will be provided for you. Wear closed toed athletic tennis shoes (for safety reasons, absolutely no heels of any kind, flip flops, boots, dress shoes, loafers, converse, uggs or toms). Wear pants that allow for movement (preferably not jeans as they restrict your movement and hold in the wetness from touching knee to ice. Also, shorts of any kind are not recommended as you will be touching knees to ice). We recommend you wear layers, as you may be cold during demonstrations, but you’ll warm up once you start sweeping!
What comes after my Learn To Curl?
The ideal path is: Learn to Curl -> curling academy -> curling league. Due to limited ice time, we can’t always offer the curling academy. If there isn’t one coming up, you can go straight from learn to curl to our competitive league. You are welcome to take as many learn to curl classes as you want. Let us know if you are a returner and interested in league and we can offer more instruction.
What is the curling academy?
This is a 4 week lesson series to help further teach new players the rules and etiquette of curling. Each week we work on deliveries, sweeping, and strategy and finish with a short coached game. This is a great course for anyone interested in getting into curling or anyone who isn’t sure if they are ready to join the competitive league yet.
How do I register for league?
Completing a learn to curl class is a requirement for joining league. Registration can be found on the utaholympiclegacy.org website under oval sports.
What level of experience is required to play?
You are required to have taken at least one learn to curl class before signing up for league play.
Can I sign up for a league without teammates? AND Can I request specific teammates for a league?
Yes, you may sign up as a single or with friends and request to be together. We can’t guarantee you will get paired with your friends, it depends on how overall numbers work out for the league, but we will try our best.
What can I expect in a league game?
League play usually starts at 8:30pm. Everyone is expected to arrive at least 20min earlier to help with ice set up. We play 6 end games. After the game, everyone is expected to help with clean up. Our league is technically competitive so we expect you to know the rules and general flow of a curling match before signing up.
What is included in and expected of my membership?
As a member of the Oval Curling Club we expect you to attend all scheduled games or provide appropriate notice of absence; follow the spirit of curling and rule book; and help with ice set up and clean up each week.
My Child is Interested in Curling. Can They Play?
The age limit for our learn to curl classes and league play is 13 and up.
Is practice ice available? Does the club offer coaching assistance?
Being an arena club with limited ice time does not allow for much practice time. When learn to curl classes do not sell out (typically only in the summer), we are sometimes able to offer practice ice. Practice ice has historically never been available in the fall or winter. We don’t have organized coaching, but sometimes more experienced curlers are willing to help the newcomers.
I’m really enjoying curling and the community here. How can I get more involved?
That’s awesome! We would love for you to consider serving on the board or helping to organize social events. We have several committees that could use your help too! Encourage pre-stacking with fellow curlers, help plan watch parties or membership meetings, and recruit new members are just a few of the areas we always need help with.
